A Peek Inside My Closet

Ok technically I have two closets. And I may own a quarter of our basement for storage of off season shoes and clothes I currently have up for sale on my Poshmark Store. When my brother moved out before he got married a couple of years ago, I took over his bedroom with the walk-in as my “dressing room”. This closet features the clothing and shoes that are currently in rotation for this season, while my regular bedroom closet holds the off season pieces. Twice a year, I take a weekend and switch out the closets for the new seasons, that being fall/winter, and spring/summer. This may seem like a lot of work, but I actually love it, and kind of look forward to it. It’s the merchandiser in me, but I feel that when I pull out my rolling racks and get to work, it’s like shopping all over again, discovering pieces in my closet that I haven’t seen in almost six months so they feel like new treasures.

How I merchandise my closet: Visual is key for me, so I need a place where I feel like I can “shop” my selections and having my shoes and accessories (except jewelry, that is displayed in full in my bedroom) merchandised with the clothing makes it easy to “see” an entire look based on how inspired I am feeling that day. For my spring/summer layout, I use the longest area for dresses, since that is what I own the most of. The shelf it runs into holds mini skirts and pants. The back wall display I feel is the “face” of the closet, where in that is the first thing you see when you walk in, so it should be the items I wear most mixed with some pretty displays. I have tried everything when it comes to displaying denim. Folded length wise, folded into 4, hung by the hem, etc. To fully utilize this space, I hung all my denim front facing out, that way I can tell which is which not only by color, but by wash, distress, leg hole opening, etc. Fun fact: when I was a freshman in college, I owned exactly 2 pairs of jeans. TWO! I never wore pants in high school, which people thought was weird since I went to a private school and had to wear skirts every day, but I was that one wierdo that on dress-down days wore a mini skirt, which earned me the nick name “anti-pants”. OWN IT. Anyways, now I love denim, as you can tell. These are primarily the ones I wear on heavy rotation, I do have some other styles put away for now, such as boot cut, colored and printed. My favorite styles are skinny and distressed, distressed boyfriend, and flare. Below the jeans are where I keep my tops, from sleeveless in front to blouse in back. I decided it was only normal to use the rest of the small space for display, so I rigged a tension rod above the dresses for all my scarves, use the shelves above to display my handbags, the larger fancier ones to the left, and the shelf below the denim holds my Carrie Bradshaw inspired Badgley Mischka shoes, jeweled pumps, and my mom’s vintage Chanel quilted cross-body that was bought for her in the late ‘70’s which she handed down to me. In the corner of my room I keep my dress form for when styling inspiration strikes, along with some pretty flowers and my most favorite flats (yes that is what I use a desk for). In the opposite corner I have a double garment rack that holds all my seasonal vests, blazers and jackets. I love collecting fitted jackets and blazers, they can really transform any piece. And finally, on the floor I have a shoe rack that I keep visible because these are not only my favorite shoes, they are the priciest and prettiest so I want them displayed safe where I can look upon a shoe and pick my outfit from there. Shoes are the starter for a lot of my outfits. I also found it easier to place my shoes in shallow bins, heel to toe, so they wont fall over when I step nearby because of the carpet. I have flats and sandals in the holder over the door, wedges, heels and sandals in the bins with like styles, and against the opposite wall, my fancy sneakers that are fashion, not work-out styles. I also hang my knee-high gladiator styles from my nail polish rack so they aren't crumpled over. Speaking of nail polish, I love the display my dad made me, this inspo obviously came right from my salon.

I love my closet, it is one of my favorite rooms in the house, and I know eventually in Anth’s new house it will be too, as I am taking the second largest bedroom and turning it into a full boutique style walk-in closet. My inspiration for that room comes from HERE. Also if you haven’t already, check out one of my fave bloggers, Rach Parcell at The Pink Peonies to see her closet, it’s an absolute dream!
