Five for Friday: Industry News

I would cry if I was this chick. And I sure as hell would not wobble off without it!

Here are Five for Friday current musings you need to know!

Remember a couple years back when the annual September issue was as thick as a Harry Potter novel? Well it’s no surprise that the fashion editorials are facing hard times this year. With the business changing, instant technology and social media at your fingertips bring faster and more affordable fashion and street style than ever before. But what about that feeling of opening a fresh glossy at the beginning of a new season and pouring over page after page of inspiration? Nothing beats that to me. I can spend all day looking at street style pics from Tommy Ton, Bryan Boy, Instagram and Style.com but even the fast fashions of what’s hot on the street today can’t compare to the carefully planned layouts, rich editorial shoots, designers, and great quality articles about everything I want to know. While it’s a tough climate right now for retail with earnings falling short in some large retailers like Kohls, Banana Republic, American Apparel, Christopher & Banks, and J. Crew (while some design houses are re-organizing and re-branding to say ahead) some magazines are facing bluer days as well. Lucky, for example has recently halted all publication as viewership subscriptions went down drastically. They will still print quarterly publications and house their online Lucky Shops in the meantime. People Style Watch recently revamped their magazine and is focusing on more fashion and affordability which includes less filler and more style. The following is a statement from Style Watch’s Editor (hello dream job) Lisa Arbetter, who was interviewed on the publications facelift by Fashionista.com’s Chantal Fernandez. (linked below)

"There are places where you can find street style, where it's [merchandized] out, and there are some places where people talk about the styling," says Arbetter, who was part of the team that originally launched Style Watch in 2007. "But there's no place that's taken all of that, editorialized it and put it together in big beautiful layouts. And that's what a magazine can do." –Lisa Arbetter, Editor of Style Watch, August 13, 2015.
When I was in fashion school, I subscribed to Elle and W magazines since they were more useful to me then for reports and projects about high fashion. Since then however, I patrol the internet for my daily dose of high fashion, and prefer to subscribe to magazines that tailor to my lifestyle now. I for one, cannot wait to see the new September issue of Style Watch, and even though every August I go to Barnes & Noble and purchase the rest of the September Issue's I don't get at home, I'm still counting down the days till they are on newsstands, as nothing beats the beginning of a new season like the glossy's.
